‘Every SEC Game is a Playoff,’ Says QB Who Lost to 5-7 Florida State

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson had some thoughts after the Crimson Tide’s win over Auburn, and let’s just say they weren’t the most grounded comments of the weekend. When asked if Alabama is a College Football Playoff team, Simpson hit the gas. “The question is, why aren’t we?” he said. Then he doubled down. “We’re the most resilient team in the country.”

Not done there, Simpson took it a step further and offered this gem: “Basically, every SEC game is a playoff game.”

Now, it would be one thing if this came from a team sitting at 12-0 with a couple of top-five wins. But we’re talking about a quarterback who got beat by two touchdowns earlier this season by a Florida State team that finished 5-7 and just watched its bowl hopes go up in smoke. So maybe tone down the championship talk.

Simpson’s comments are part of a bigger problem, though. This isn’t just one quarterback speaking out of turn. It’s the same tired SEC echo chamber where every conference win is treated like a Super Bowl, and every loss is just chalked up to “SEC cannibalism.” These guys don’t just lack self-awareness, they’re completely allergic to it.

There’s no question Alabama is a solid team. They handled Auburn and are still one of the better rosters in the country. But when you’ve got a blemish like a double-digit loss to a below-average Florida State team, you lose the right to talk like a lock for the Playoff. That’s just how this works for everyone else.

But for some reason, in SEC circles, those rules don’t apply. Lose a game? It’s a tough league. Drop one to a bad team? Well, the environment was hostile. Get bounced from the Playoff picture? Blame the committee for “not respecting the SEC.” It’s the same song every year, and guys like Simpson are just the latest verse.
