The month of November brings many things in the world of college sports. College football, the start of college basketball begins, and then, of course, we get the College Football Playoff rankings every Tuesday night.
There have been plenty of head-scratching moments from the playoff committee on a weekly basis, so I thought it would be fun to share my three thoughts on this week’s playoff rankings.
Texas Tech Has a Chance to Get a Bye
Thanks to an Aggie meltdown in Austin, the Red Raiders were able to jump from No. 4 to No. 5 and put themselves in the driver’s seat for a first round bye. As of now, they are likely going to play the winner of the Oregon/fifth conference champion which could be either from the ACC or AAC. The only downside for Tech would be that they don’t get to host a playoff game in Lubbock, but I am sure Joey McGuire would much rather have that first round bye and be that much closer to a trip to Miami. But first, Texas Tech will need to take care of business in Arlington to make this happen. Â
It’s Do or Die for BYU
At this point, I don’t know what else BYU can do to be in the Top 10. They have the resumes of a Top 10 team and just one loss, which is a lot better than some of the other teams such as Notre Dame, Alabama, and Oklahoma. There is no reason for those teams with two losses to be ahead of BYU and when you look at blind resumes, the Cougars should be in the Top 10, but of course that Big 12 logo is probably what’s hurting their chances. Unfortunately, the only way for BYU to get into the postseason will be taking down a Top 5 Texas Tech team on Saturday. I don’t care who you are, that is much easier said than done.
Utah Gets Screwed Again
For the second week in a row, Utah finds themselves getting bumped down after a win. A week ago, the Utes got bumped down a spot after beating Kansas State, while Miami jumped them after beating a bad Virginia Tech team. That move made zero sense by the committee and here they are again making yet another head-scratching decision this week. Utah went on the road and beat Kansas on a sleepy early kickoff on Black Friday. They ended up winning by double digits and the committee didn’t just bump them down one spot, but two. Call me a homer, but Utah is better than some of these teams ranked ahead of them and they should be in the playoffs.
