Texas Tech just made it official: Joey McGuire isn’t going anywhere. The Red Raiders handed their head coach a new seven-year contract that’ll keep him in Lubbock through the 2032 season. By the end of it, McGuire’s salary will top $7 million annually, with some hefty incentives baked in that could drive the total even higher.
This is a massive deal for the Texas Tech Athletic Department, and it’s one that makes a lot of sense when you look at what McGuire’s done since arriving. He’s completely flipped the energy around the program, brought in top-tier recruiting classes, and now has Tech sitting at 11-1 with a Big 12 Championship Game on deck. If you’re trying to send a message that you’re serious about football in West Texas, this is how you do it.
The timing of the deal couldn’t be more perfect. Texas Tech is riding one of its best seasons in recent memory, and McGuire has become a name that other programs are envious of. Locking him in now says you’re not going to let another school poach the guy who brought the swagger back to the Red Raiders.
Joey McGuire took over as the Red Raiders head coach prior to the 2022 season, coming over following a multi-year gig as an assistant with the Baylor Bears. McGuire went 8-5 in 2022, 7-6 in 2023 and then 8-5 in 2024 before popping to this year’s 11-1 campaign. He’s now 34-17 as the head coach, including a 24-12 mark in Big 12 play.
Now, with stability in the head coach’s office and some real juice on the recruiting trail, Tech can keep building the way McGuire wants, fast, physical, and unapologetically aggressive. The guy fits the program like a glove, and now he’s got the contract to match.
There’s no more guessing if Tech is all in on football. They are, and they’re riding with the guy who got them back in the conversation. Joey McGuire isn’t just the head coach in Lubbock; he’s the future. And now that future is signed, sealed, and well-funded.
