Tayven Jackson is headed for the portal again.
The UCF quarterback has officially decided to move on after just one season in Orlando, marking his third stop in college football. This one probably doesn’t surprise anybody who’s been paying attention. Jackson came in with a shot to solidify the position for Scott Frost, but the results were just kind of mid, and now both sides are going their separate ways.
Jackson, a former four-star recruit, started his career at Tennessee, jumped to Indiana, and eventually landed at UCF this past offseason. The idea was that he’d bring some polish and maturity to a quarterback room that needed it. Instead, he threw 10 touchdowns to eight interceptions on the year, and the Knights limped to a 5-7 finish in Year 2 of Big 12 play.
To be fair, he showed flashes. There were moments when the arm talent looked legit, and he showed enough athleticism to keep defenses honest. But the consistency wasn’t there, and UCF’s offense never really clicked with him running the show. It didn’t help that the offensive line struggled, the run game was streaky, and the defense couldn’t bail them out like it did in the AAC days.
From Jackson’s perspective, it makes sense to dip. He’s got one more year of eligibility and probably doesn’t want to ride the bench or split reps in a system that didn’t fit all that well to begin with. Somewhere out there, there’s a Group of Five school or a Power Four rebuild that’ll give him another shot to run the show. And given his pedigree, someone’s going to bite.
As for UCF, this means another quarterback shuffle is coming. With Jackson out, they’ll likely go hunting in the portal again unless they’ve got a young guy they trust to take the reins. Either way, the carousel keeps spinning in Orlando. Frost came into the job hoping to keep things stable at the most important position. Now he’s back to square one.
It’s not a huge shock, and honestly, it’s probably best for everyone. Jackson gets a chance to find a better fit, and UCF gets to hit reset on a QB room that wasn’t getting it done. Now it’s just a matter of who finds the right match first.
