UCF is about to take a hit on the defensive front, with starting lineman John Walker planning to enter the transfer portal. This one’s going to sting a little more than usual. Walker isn’t just some rotational piece; he’s a former Freshman All-American and one of the most physically gifted players on the Knights’ roster.
In two seasons at UCF, Walker put together a solid stat line. He totaled 59 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and a pair of pass deflections. Most of that came from the inside, where his 6-foot-4, 324-pound frame helped him anchor against the run and flash a little disruption when given space to move. He was named a 2023 Freshman All-American by On3 after a strong first year that included five tackles for loss and plenty of flashes that made it clear his ceiling is still rising.
Now he’s headed for the portal, and it’s fair to assume there will be plenty of interest. Guys that size with that kind of early production don’t last long without landing somewhere new. He’s got two years of eligibility left and enough tape to get attention from programs across the Power Four.
For UCF, this is part of the reality of life in the Big 12. The Knights are still trying to level up the roster to compete week-to-week in the trenches, and losing a guy like Walker leaves a noticeable gap. You don’t just replace interior linemen who’ve already proven they can hang in this league. That’s especially true when they’re still on the upswing development-wise.
As for Walker, the move makes sense if he’s looking for a bigger stage or a better fit. Maybe it’s a chance to get closer to home, or maybe he’s looking for a scheme that lets him play with a little more freedom. Either way, it’s clear he believes there’s more to unlock in his game, and he’s betting on himself to find the right place to do it.
The portal has changed the game for guys like this, and Walker is exactly the kind of player who can use it to take the next step.
