Utah quarterback Byrd Ficklin has agreed to the terms of a one-year deal to remain with the Utes, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
The freshman quarterback reportedly received interest from multiple programs in the ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten, but will be back in Salt Lake City for his sophomore season. Ficklin was not a highly-touted prospect coming out of Muskogee High School in Oklahoma as a three-star recruit. But he made a huge impact as a freshman and back up to Devon Dampier.
Ficklin finished the year with 56 carries, 503 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns this season. Through the air, he also completed 60% of his passes for 301 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Ficklin played plenty this year filling in for an injured Dampier, along with giving teams a second look late in the season. He started one game against Colorado and racked up 140 passing yards, 151 rushing yards and three total touchdowns, helping the team with the game 53-7.
He also had six carries for 166 yards and two rushing touchdowns vs. Baylor, along with seven carries for 54 yards and three touchdowns against Kansas State.
Ficklin was also awarded Big 12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Week twice this season. He also earned one Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor.
No. 15 Utah is set to take on Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 31.
