During the TNT Sports postgame show, Jalen Rose and Jamal Mashburn brought up a topic that’s been simmering behind the scenes: whether or not Peterson should shut it down for the rest of the season.
The former NBA vets didn’t hold back. Mashburn flat-out said he would “really seriously consider shutting it down,” pointing to Peterson’s lingering injury issues and what’s at stake for his future. Rose agreed, saying the hamstring has clearly been a problem, and pushing through it might not be the smartest move long term. The clip’s making the rounds, and for good reason; it’s not just talk anymore, it’s a real conversation.
Peterson has missed time this season, but when he’s available, he looks like the best player in college basketball. Still, injuries are tough to take down. There’s no doubting the talent; he’s still projected as a top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, but this injury has clearly hung around longer than anyone expected. In the second half of Saturday’s game, he pulled himself out late, told the trainers he was tight, and didn’t return.
Bill Self hasn’t sounded any alarms publicly, but you can tell there’s some concern behind the scenes. When a player like Peterson is checking himself out in a tight game, that’s not about saving minutes or managing rotations. That’s a guy who doesn’t feel right, and at this point in the year, it might be time to stop trying to force it.
It’s not an easy call. Kansas could use him down the stretch, especially with conference play around the corner. But the bigger picture matters here. This isn’t just about one season of college hoops. This is about draft stock, long-term health, and millions of dollars down the road. Mashburn and Rose know what that means, and they’re not wrong for saying it out loud.
If Peterson does end up sitting, it’ll sting for Kansas fans. But it might be the smartest decision he could make right now.
