The moves keep coming for newly introduced Iowa State head football coach Jimmy Rogers.
The Cyclones are set to hire Houston wide receivers coach Derrick Sherman to the emerging staff in Ames, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports on Friday.
Sherman served as the receivers coach and assistant head coach to Willie Fritz at Houston for two seasons. Under Sherman, the Cougars averaged 12.1 yards per catch behind First Team All-Big 12 wide receiver Amare Thomas (906 yards, 10 touchdowns) and tight end Tanner Koziol (651 yards, 5 touchdowns).
Iowa State finished seventh amongst Big 12 passers with 221.4 yards per game and 2,657 total yards through the air. The arm of three-year starting quarterback Rocco Becht, son of former NFL tight end Anthony Becht, will be a nice cushion for Sherman to work with in his first season.
The Sherman file stretches far, with stops at Tulane (analayst 2016-2017, wide receivers 2022-2023), Georgia Southern (graduate assistant 2014, wide receivers 2021), Samford (offensive coordinator/running backs 2018-2019), Pittsburg State (wide receivers 2015), West Virginia (wide receivers 2013) and Southwest Baptist (wide receivers 2012).
Sherman is the newest addition to the Rogers regime.
Washington State interim announced Monday he’ll be following Rogers to Iowa State to become the team’s defensive coordinator following the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Utah State on Monday, Dec. 22.
Rogers also named Auburn and former Ole Miss offensive line coach Jake Thornton to the coaching staff for the same role, as well as former Cyclones receiver Chris Campbell as the strength and conditioning coach.
