The quarterback conversation at Kansas just became a bit clearer (and not in a good way).
Kansas freshman quarterback David McComb plans to enter the transfer portal, according to a report by Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports on Friday morning.
McComb, leaving Lawrence with four years of eligibility left, was the No. 15 recruit out of Oklahoma and the No. 42 quarterback in the country. He did not see action during his freshman season at KU.
In high school, McComb threw for 7,034 yards, 60 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions during his career at Edmond Memorial in Edmond, Oklahoma. He chose Lance Leipold and KU over Virginia, Memphis, Tulane, and others.
McComb was expected to compete directly with redshirt junior Cole Ballard and redshirt sophomore Isaiah Marshall for the starting job in 2026. Sixth-year senior Jalon Daniels, recently declaring his plans for the 2026 NFL Draft, started all 12 games for the Jayhawks this season.
It’s the 14th portal loss for KU already this offseason and the first from the quarterback room.
With McComb out of the picture, Ballard and Marshall will go head-to-head for the starting job this spring and again in the fall.
Ballard, backup to Daniels in 2024 and 2025, completed just 10 of 22 passes for 108 yards, one touchdown, and one interception this past season. Ballard started in two home losses against Texas Tech and Kansas State in 2023.
Marshall, another three-star quarterback from Southfield, Michigan, completed 3 of 3 passes for 28 yards as a redshirt freshman.
