Former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has suddenly become the frontrunner for the Michigan job, and that’s not something anyone really saw coming a few weeks ago. According to Kalshi Sports, Whittingham holds a 22 percent chance of landing the job, the highest percentage on the board right now. That puts him ahead of names like Jeff Brohm, Biff Poggi, and just about every splashy outsider people have thrown into the mix.
Whittingham stepped away from coaching at the end of the 2024 season after nearly two decades of running Utah’s program. He left on his own terms, with a career record most coaches would kill for, and no signs of being pushed out. It felt like a full retirement. But if Michigan is seriously in play and he’s listening, then it’s a different conversation. That’s not just a job. That’s a place where you can win right away and compete for titles.
The Whittingham fit makes sense in a weird way. Michigan has never been about the flash. They want structure, toughness, and consistency. Whittingham checks every one of those boxes. He turned Utah into a physical, disciplined program that punched above its weight every year. He’s recruited well, developed pros, and held his own against every type of roster you can think of. If Michigan’s looking for a guy who can run a clean operation without needing a PR department to explain everything he says, Whittingham is your guy.
Nothing’s locked in yet, and coaching searches can change on a dime. But right now, Kyle Whittingham is trending as the most likely name to take over at Michigan. And if that happens, it’s going to shake up a whole lot more than just the Big Ten.
