The College Football Playoff is still a couple of weeks away, but the betting line between Texas Tech and Oregon is already doing backflips. In a span of 24 hours, the spread has flipped twice, and nobody seems to know where it’s going to settle. It opened with Oregon as a 1.5-point favorite. Two hours later, it flipped to Texas Tech -1.5. By the next morning, it had moved right back to Oregon -1.5 on DraftKings.
While it’s not unprecedented, it’s definitely unusual. That’s people hitting both sides like they’ve got insider info. Usually, you see some drift when the public starts throwing money around or when a big injury hits. This isn’t that. This is just a straight tug-of-war between people who believe in both parties.
Texas Tech hasn’t lost a game since early October. They’ve rolled through the Big 12 and are coming into the Playoff looking like they’ve figured it all out. Defensively, they’ve clamped down late in the season, and on offense, they’re balanced and dangerous. There’s no fluke here. They’ve earned their spot. That early money flipping the line was probably just sharp bettors looking at the matchup and liking Tech’s chances in a controlled setting.
We’ll see where it ends up by kickoff, but for now, this thing is bouncing around like crazy. Either Vegas doesn’t know how to price Texas Tech, or both fan bases have enough confidence to throw money around. Probably both.
