As we head to the week of Christmas, there is plenty to look forward to. Between family, friends, gifts, and so much more, it’s one of the best times of the year. And while most people are wishing for something from Santa, Michigan fans are going to be wishing for someone instead.
The Wolverines are still without a head coach after the Sherrone Moore debacle and are in desperate need of a replacement. While I may not be Santa Claus, I think I have the perfect candidate in mind for the people of Ann Arbor.
Kyle Whittingham is a Fit For Michigan
Look no further than former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, who recently also became the betting favorite to end up in Ann Arbor. After spending the last 30 years in Salt Lake City, the last 20 have been spent as the head coach. He won three conference titles between the Mountain West and Pac-12 and has won multiple Coach of the Year awards. Whittingham left Utah with a record of 177-88, along with 11 bowl victories. That resume alone should be good enough to get into the College Football Hall of Fame.
When Whittingham announced his decision to leave Utah after their upcoming bowl game, he never said that he was done coaching. When asked directly about it, he responded with, “When you have coaching in your blood, it just doesn’t go away.”
At 66 years old, he may not be the ideal candidate to take over, but due to their current situation, he may be exactly what they need. Michigan doesn’t need some young upstart first time head coach. They need some stability and someone to help guide them back to normalcy and who is better to do that than Kyle Whittingham?
Personality is a Match
Kyle would be that father-like figure that is much needed in Ann Arbor. He’s not flashy at all and he will bring his hard hat and lunch pail attitude to work every day. He can put out the fire that is the Michigan football program and help build something new.
At this stage in his life, some are probably asking, “Why Michigan?” While I can’t speak for Whittingham, I can say that I don’t see him coaching for another five years. But that’s ok. This late in the year, good luck finding the perfect candidate because everyone already has their coach for 2026.
He may not be the Michigan Man that everyone is looking for, but is he the man that Michigan needs. Kyle can come in and get things on the straight and narrow from the moment he steps foot in Ann Arbor.
Let him take over and get the train back on the track. Whittingham has proved that he is a good coach and most importantly a good person. Is he going to be the future of Michigan football?
