Utah is making a midseason move that’s definitely worth watching, picking up 6’5 guard Lucas Langarita, who will be eligible to play immediately in the second semester. The 20-year-old isn’t your typical mid-year addition. He’s already got a solid international résumé and will be reuniting with Martin Schiller, who coached him overseas. This is a fit that makes a ton of sense.
Langarita’s been productive every time he’s stepped on the floor, especially on the international stage. He averaged 17.1 points, 3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists during the U20 EuroBasket in Greece last summer and looked like one of the better playmakers in the tournament. That wasn’t his first splash either. Back in 2022, he earned All-Tournament honors at the U17 World Cup alongside guys like Cooper Flagg, Koa Peat, and Izan Almansa.
As a player, he’s a little bit of a mixed bag, in a good way. He’s not just a shooter, though he can knock it down in streaks. He’s got good size for a guard and defends well, which should keep him on the floor even if the shots aren’t falling. He can score off the dribble, make smart reads, and doesn’t need to dominate the ball to make an impact. He’s more of a playmaker than a scorer, but he’s capable of both depending on what’s needed.
From Utah’s perspective, this is a pretty low-risk, high-upside move. They’re adding a guy with legit experience, solid versatility, and built-in familiarity with the coaching staff. Schiller already knows what he’s getting, and that alone puts Langarita ahead of the curve compared to most midseason additions.
It’s also just smart timing. Big 12 play is a grind, and having another ball-handler and defender you can trust matters. If Langarita settles in quickly, he could give Utah a legitimate spark off the bench or even slide into bigger minutes if needed. He’s not here to be the star, but he might end up playing a bigger role than people think.
Utah’s not just sitting back and riding out the season. They’re still trying to find ways to get better, and adding a guy like Langarita midyear is exactly how you do that.
