BYU’s Jay Hill a Potential Target for Michigan DC Job

Following reports that Michigan is hiring Kyle Whittingham as its next head coach, BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill has been linked to the defensive coordinator opening in Ann Arbor, per Matt Zenitz.

“Hill, who has a longstanding relationship with Kyle Whittingham, has led the way as BYU is ranked 21st nationally in scoring defense,” Zenitz wrote.

He joined BYU in 2023 and made an immediate impact, transforming the Cougars’ defense into one of the most consistent and physical units in the Big 12. The Cougars held opponents to just 19 points per game, ranking among the conference’s best in scoring defense.

Hill’s aggressive, disciplined approach helped elevate the program’s identity on that side of the ball and made BYU a tough out each week in league play.

If he does follow Whittingham to Michigan, the Wolverines would gain a defensive mind with Power Five experience, as well as a reputation for building fast, sound, and hard-hitting defenses.

His potential departure would be a significant loss for BYU and a major addition for a Michigan staff aiming to maintain its defensive standard.

The Cougars will look to secure their first 12-win season since 2001 when they face Georgia Tech in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 27, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
