No. 21 Houston will face the LSU Tigers of the SEC in the Kinder’s Texas Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 27, with kickoff set for 9:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Cougars are coming off a strong 9-3 campaign in their third season as a Big 12 member and enter the matchup as 1.5-point favorites. The over/under is set at 42.5 total points.

Saturday’s showdown gives Houston a chance to secure its first 10-win season since 2021 and earn a statement victory over an LSU team that entered the year with high expectations and a top-25 ranking. Here are two key players to watch in this game, followed by the top storylines for each team, and a prediction from Heartland College Sports.

Two Key Players to Watch

Conner Weigman, Houston Quarterback

Houston’s success in 2025 was driven largely by its high-powered passing attack, led by standout quarterback Conner Weigman. The former Texas A&M transfer threw for over 2,400 yards and 24 touchdowns on the season, showcasing impressive poise and arm strength in his first year under center for the Cougars. Weigman eclipsed 250 passing yards in three different outings and developed strong chemistry with his receiving corps as the year progressed. Against an LSU defense that has struggled with consistency, particularly in the secondary, Weigman is well-positioned for a potential breakout performance in the Texas Bowl.

Caden Durham, LSU Running Back

Running back Caden Durham emerged as LSU’s top rushing threat by the end of the regular season, finishing with 505 yards on 4.8 yards per carry. He showed flashes of explosiveness throughout the year and figures to be a central piece of the Tigers’ offensive game plan in the Texas Bowl. With starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier ruled out, LSU is likely to lean more heavily on its ground attack to control tempo and take pressure off the passing game.

Top Storylines

LSU Aims to End Disappointing Season on a High Note

After entering the year with preseason top-10 expectations, LSU finished 7-5 and missed out on major bowl contention. A win over a ranked Houston team would restore some momentum heading into a pivotal offseason following the firing of Brian Kelly and the high-profile hiring of Lane Kiffin. A strong showing in the Texas Bowl could help LSU reset the tone after a frustrating and inconsistent season.

Houston Gets Rare Home-Field Advantage in Bowl Season

One of the most unique aspects of the 2025 Kinder’s Texas Bowl is Houston playing just minutes from its campus at NRG Stadium. Bowl games are typically neutral-site matchups or require long-distance travel. Still, the Cougars will enjoy a familiar setting and a strong local crowd, an uncommon advantage in postseason play.

Prediction: Houston 28, LSU 17

The Cougars are more stable heading into the bowl, with their starting quarterback intact and playing in front of a home crowd. Weigman’s experience and decision-making give Houston a clear edge under center. While LSU has the talent to compete, the lack of continuity and clarity heading into the bowl creates a significant disadvantage against a Houston team with far more cohesion. While LSU may keep things competitive in the first half, Houston’s offensive firepower and stability should allow the Cougars to pull away after halftime.
