Utah is officially back in the market for an offensive coordinator.
Jason Beck is set to follow Kyle Whittingham over to Michigan following a 44-22 win over Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl on Wednesday, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
After passing the torch at Utah to defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley, Whittingham wasn’t shy about peppering the press with the idea his coaching days aren’t over. Whittingham has his offensive playcaller, and another big Utah name could be on the way.
BYU is reportedly fighting to preserve defensive coordinator Jay Hill, who coached multiple positions for Whittingham at Utah for eight seasons. He’d later become the head coach at Weber State before becoming the DC at BYU in 2023.
As for Beck, he’s the latest in the Big 12 to Big Ten pipeline.

Beck, replacing Andy Ludwig beginning with the 2025 season, delivered the best Utah offense’s in recent memory. For the first time since 2004 under Urban Meyer, the Utes ranked fifth in the country with 41.1 points per game, and ninth in total offense with 478.6 yards per game.
On Wednesday, Utah rushed for 225 yards and four touchdowns, three by quarterback Devon Dampier and another by running back NaQuari Rogers. Dampier, throwing for nearly 2,500 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions with one year of eligibility remaining, followed Beck from New Mexico to Utah this last offseason.
But, Michigan isn’t exactly squeezed at quarterback. Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 overall ranked high school football player in the Class of 2025, is likely to stay in Ann Arbor now that the program has landed a trusted name in Whittingham to right the ship.
Beck’s eye candy and RPO integration are obvious draws for the Wolverines, and a young starting quarterback in Underwood can help take Michigan from a stalled result in 2025 (Michigan ranked 69th nationally with 27.6 points per game).
Internally, Utah’s options to replace Beck likely come down to assistant coach/offensive line coach Jim Harding or offensive analyst Ryan Blakney; the pair have a combined 18 years of experience under Whittingham alone.
