In a move that many around the Big 12 likely could have predicted, Iowa State’s former All-Big 12 tight end Ben Brahmer is following head coach Matt Campbell to Penn State.
Brahmer is listed as the No. 1 tight end in the portal by 247Sports, and was widely considered one of the biggest losses of the offseason for Iowa State. He isn’t the only notable Cyclone considering Penn State, either, as star quarterback Rocco Becht appears to be trending toward a similar fate.
Multiple experts in the industry gave official predictions for Brahmer to Penn State yesterday, including Chris Hummer of 247Sports, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, and many other notable figures. In his three-year career in Ames, Brahmer posted 75 grabs for 977 yards and nine touchdowns. Last season, en route to All-Big 12 honors, Brahmer recorded 37 receptions for 446 yards and six total touchdowns, three of which came in consecutive games against Arizona State, TCU, and Kansas.
For the Big 12, it’s a tough look anytime you lose someone of Brahmer’s talent elsewhere, but for Iowa State fans, it stings that much more. New head coach Jimmy Rogers will likely do a great job in time, but it’s not ridiculous to say that the coaching move has come with some significant losses.
Brahmer isn’t the first player to follow his head coach to a new program through the transfer portal, and her certainly won’t be the last. He likely won’t be the last player to go from Ames to State College either, and more news could be on the way very soon for Matt Campbell and his former program.
