Texas Tech just added another weapon to its growing arsenal, landing a commitment from former Pitt wide receiver Kenny Johnson. The 6-foot pass catcher hauled in 94 balls for 1,232 yards and eight touchdowns over the last two seasons with the Panthers, and now he’s headed to Lubbock to join one of the most active portal classes in the country.

This is the kind of pickup that feels like a win on multiple levels. Not only is Johnson a proven playmaker from a Power Four program, but he’s also a real factor on special teams. He’s taken two returns to the house in his career and brings the kind of twitch and vision that can flip a game in a blink. Texas Tech has been looking for more of that on both sides of the ball, and Kenny Johnson fits what they’re building.

The portal’s been flooded this cycle, but Johnson still managed to stand out. He’s ranked as the 485th player overall, and the No. 94 wideout, which might not scream superstar on paper, but the film and numbers tell a different story. He was one of Pitt’s most consistent weapons in an offense that didn’t always give him the best setup to shine.

What’s really going to turn heads here is the broader context. With Johnson’s commitment, Texas Tech now holds the No. 3 transfer class in the country and the second-best in the Big 12 behind only Oklahoma State.

Johnson brings experience, production, and versatility to a receiver room that already has some juice. He’ll have a shot to carve out a real role in Year One, and with the way Tech spreads the ball around, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him put up his best numbers yet.

Texas Tech didn’t just grab a wide receiver on Wednesday. They landed a playmaker with multiple ways to hurt you, and they’re not done yet.
