Baylor has landed one of the top 10 portal quarterbacks in Florida transfer DJ Lagway, according to multiple reports.
Dave Aranda and the Bears have locked down their presumable starter in Lagway, a former five-star recruit by 247Sports and an SEC-level talent in desperate need of a reset following two seasons under Billy Napier, now at James Madison after his firing from Florida midseason in October.
Lagway went 10-9 as Florida’s starter, with an output of 4,179 yards and 29 touchdowns in that frame. The Willis, Texas, native played in all 12 games this past season, including a 29-21 home win over Texas in Week 5.
Florida ultimately finished the season 4-8 overall and 11th in the SEC; the Gators finished 12th in total offense (21.58 ppg), and Lagway’s 14 interceptions were the most among all Power Four passers. Still, Lagway’s a prove passer less than 100 yards shy of back-to-back 2,000-plus yard seasons to begin his career.
Lagway is a quarterback that can walk into this conference and compete right away, and his background at Willis High School, roughly two and a half hours from Waco, won’t hurt one bit for fans of Texas high school football.
Baylor, finishing 5-7 overall and 11th in the Big 12, went into the portal with a quarterback in mind. Auburn transfer Walker White hit the portal again after just one season, and 2025 starter Sawyer Robertson is prepping for the NFL Draft.
In 2025, Baylor offensive coordinator Jake Spavital’s unit ranked fifth in scoring (31.1 ppg) amongst Big 12 teams. Baylor has already added two new names – Asher Hale (South Alabama), Logan Moore (UAB) – to the offensive line since December.
Baylor will likely seek out another quarterback to complete the room alongside Lagway and returning junior backup Nate Bennett, who completed five passes for 34 yards this past season.
