Colorado safety Carter Stoutmire is heading to the transfer portal after three solid years in the Buffs’ secondary. This isn’t just some name hitting the portal, either. Stoutmire has been a key part of the defense since he got to Boulder, and his exit leaves a noticeable gap in a group that already had depth concerns.
Across the last three seasons, Stoutmire totaled 90 tackles and 12 pass breakups. That includes 38 tackles and five breakups in just eight games this season. He missed some time, but when he was on the field, he was active and dependable.
For Colorado, this one’s going to be tough to replace. The Buffs have already been looking to rebuild on defense after a season full of flashes but not enough consistency. Stoutmire wasn’t perfect, but he brought a veteran presence to the back end and usually kept things calm when stuff broke down up front.
As for Stoutmire, this move makes sense if he’s looking for a fresh start or a better fit scheme-wise. He’s got the production and experience to land somewhere that needs immediate help in the secondary. It’s tough to blame a kid walking away after a 3-9 season, especially one that’s been loyal to the program for three seasons.
The timing isn’t ideal for Colorado, but this is the new reality. The portal cuts both ways. Stoutmire gave the Buffs three quality seasons, and now he’s looking for the next step. Wherever he lands, he’s going to help somebody’s defense right away.
