Baylor Added the Former No. 1 JUCO Player in the Country

Baylor has added another body up front with the signing of South Carolina transfer Zavion Hardy. The former No. 1 JUCO prospect in the 2025 class played in just one game this season and didn’t record any stats, but the Bears are clearly betting on what he could become, not what he’s done so far.

This isn’t some instant-impact portal splash. It’s a long-term play on upside, and it’s the kind of move that makes sense for where Baylor is right now. Hardy’s a big, athletic defensive lineman with a strong JUCO background and enough raw ability to be worth the gamble. He didn’t find a role in Columbia, but that doesn’t mean he won’t find one in Waco.

Hardy’s still young, still developing, and for a Baylor team trying to build depth across the defensive line, there’s room to take this kind of swing. He won’t be asked to come in and save the defense. He’ll be part of a rotation that’s starting to take shape with more size, more length, and more competition than what we saw last season.

The JUCO label carries some weight because Hardy wasn’t just another recruit coming out of that level. He was the top-ranked player in his class. That means the tools are there. The question is whether Baylor’s staff can tap into them and get him to a place where he’s making real contributions. That’s the gamble. But in today’s portal world, if you’re going to gamble, this is the way to do it.

If it hits, great. You’ve got a former top JUCO guy turning into a quality Big 12 lineman. If it doesn’t, you didn’t mortgage your depth chart to make it happen. Baylor can afford this move, and in a league where defensive line depth always matters, Hardy is a name worth keeping an eye on.
