While it should not come as a shock to anyone who’s watched college basketball this season, the Big 12 now has the nation’s top two-ranked teams in the latest AP Top 25 poll.
Those teams are, of course, No. 1 Arizona and No. 2 Iowa State, whose resumes are about as close to the same as they can be. The Wildcats currently sit undefeated, a perfect 16-0 with a 3-0 conference record. They also happen to be 5-0 in Quad 1 games, 4-0 in Quad 2 games, 0-0 in Quad 3, and 7-0 in Quad 4 games.
Interestingly enough, Iowa State sits at 16-0 with a 3-0 conference record, a 5-0 record in Quad 1 games, 4-0 in Quad 2 games, 0-0 in Quad 3, and 7-0 in Quad 4 games. The two teams are perfect parallels of one another, and absolutely no one in the country wants to play either group right now.
The pair is joined by three other teams in the AP Top 25 this week, a change from last week’s seven. Houston remained the same at No. 7 while BYU dropped to No. 11 and Texas Tech dropped to No. 15. The two teams booted out of the poll were No. 22 Kansas and No. 25 UCF, as the Jayhawks dropped a game to West Virginia in Morgantown, and UCF narrowly edged past Cincinnati 73-72.
While there’s still a ton of basketball left to be played this season, it’s easy to see why the Big 12 is so dominant yet again. They have the best coaches, players, and environments in the country, and just about anyone in the league can beat anyone on any given night.
