Bruce Pearl got on Twitter today and finally admitted what the rest of us have known for a while: the Big 12 is the best conference in college basketball. He tweeted, “Last season the SEC was the best league in the history of college basketball! This season, the best league, especially at the top, is the Big 12.” One half of that sentence is spot on. The other half? Not even close.
Let’s start with the first part. “Best league in the history of college basketball” is a wild thing to say about last year’s SEC. The league had some solid teams, sure. But history? That’s a stretch big enough to drive a team bus through. Nobody outside the SEC was watching last season thinking, “Yeah, this is the greatest conference we’ve ever seen.” The tournament results didn’t back that up, the overall depth didn’t back that up, and the idea that it was better than the old Big East, or even the Big 12 from the past two decades, doesn’t hold up.
But credit where it’s due, Pearl came around. Saying the Big 12 is the best league this season isn’t a hot take. It’s just reality. The top of the conference is loaded. You’ve got multiple teams with legit National Championship potential, and even the middle of the pack is dangerous on any given night. It’s not just about blue bloods or one-year wonders. It’s a top-to-bottom gauntlet, and anyone who watches basketball regularly can see the difference.
The Big 12 has been carrying that weight for a few years now, and it’s nice to see coaches outside the league finally acknowledging it. Whether it’s Arizona, Houston, Kansas, or Iowa State, the level of basketball being played right now is as good as it gets.
So sure, the SEC talk from last year was nonsense, but at least Pearl’s got the vision straight in 2026. The Big 12 is the best basketball conference in the country right now, and it’s not particularly close.
