The University of Kansas announced on Monday that Bill Self was taken to the hospital, and now audio allegedly from the EMS call is shedding more light onto what Self may have been dealing with.
KWCH 12 News in Wichita obtained audio of the EMS call, where the dispatcher notes, “Chest pain at Allen Fieldhouse.”
KU put out a much more generic statement regarding what happened with Self, simply saying, “Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt under the weather earlier today and, out of an abundance of caution, was taken to LMH Health where he received IV fluids. He is feeling better but did not accompany the team to Boulder.”
Bill Self’s Health History
Self has been hospitalized multiple times over the course of the last four years. He missed time during the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament with a No. 1 seeded Kansas team in March of 2023.
He was hospitalized again in July 2025 after having two stents inserted to treat blocked arteries.
Prior to the start of the 2025-26 season back in August, Self said he was “feeling pretty good,” and added that doctors told him improvements in his lifestyle and life choices, primarily with food and exercise, would help his health.
When Self missed time in 2023, Norm Roberts served as the head coach for KU. If Self is unable to coach on Tuesday night vs. Colorado, associate head coach Jeremy Case would be in line to take over head coaching responsibilities.
Kansas’ Schedule
Kansas has won two in a row after victories against No. 2 Iowa State and Baylor last week, and now prepares to travel to take on Colorado on Tuesday night with tip off at 10:00 p.m. CT.
Kansas comes in 13-5 (3-2 Big 12), while Colorado is 12-6 (2-3 Big 12). Last time out, Kansas beat Baylor 80-62 and Colorado fell to West Virginia 72-61.
