Despite the fact that ESPN makes its bias for the SEC painfully clear, for once, they’re actually giving the Big 12 some legit respect.
After the conclusion of last night’s National Championship Game, ESPN released its picks for its way-too-early Top 25 for the 2026 College Football season. Five Big 12 teams were featured on the list, which is an exciting sign for things ahead.
Texas Tech – No. 7
It should go without saying why Texas Tech checks in as high as they do. They’ve had an incredible offseason (yet again), loading up with stars from across the country. The main focus here should be on Cincinnati transfer Brendan Sorsby, though the talent around him may be even better than last year’s weapons.
BYU – No. 11
Retaining two key faces earned the Cougars some shine: Head Coach Kalani Sitake and star quarterback Bear Bachmeier. Sitake was deep in conversations with Penn State this offseason prior to Matt Campbell being hired, and while Bachmeier didn’t waver at all when it came to the portal, he likely received loads of offers elsewhere with elite money on the table.
TCU – No. 20
The last few places on the list are a little more subjective when it comes to rounding out the Top 25, though TCU passed with flying colors. Despite losing star quarterback Josh Hoover to Indiana, Sonny Dykes addressed the Horned Frogs’ key losses with stars and underrated players, which should keep them firmly in the conversation.
Arizona State – No. 23
Sure, Arizona State lost Sam Leavitt, but does Kenny Dillingham look like someone who’s panicking? Absolutely not. They have brought in an impressive portal class this year, headlined by Kentucky transfer Cutter Boley, who should be the man under center unless rising freshman Jake Fette hits earlier than expected.
Utah – No. 25
New head coach, no problem! Going from Kyle Whittingham to Morgan Scalley was only a matter of time, and the new man in the headset has done a great job of keeping the roster intact. Both star quarterbacks return for the Utes, Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin, paired with a roster that’s sure to be in the middle of a strong Big 12 race next fall.
