Houston basketball‘s record-breaking 16-game road winning streak ended on Saturday in a loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 90-86. The loss was Houston’s first true road loss since at No. 8 Kansas on February 3rd, 2024, nearly two years ago.
That road winning streak was the longest active run in the country, with all of them Big 12 games for a league record. However, on Saturday, the No. 12 Red Raiders put an end to the streak thanks to an offensive explosion, especially in the first half. The Cougars secured this record with a 77-55 victory at Baylor on January 10, 2026.
Texas Tech put up an astounding 55 points in the first half, as JT Toppin lead the Red Raiders with 31 points and 12 rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes in the game. Christian Anderson also played 40 minutes with 12 points and nine assists.
The 55 points given up by Houston in the first half were a record under Kelvin Sampson, according to ESPN.
In the loss, freshman Kingston Fleming scored 42 points on 15-26 shooting, while knocking down 4-9 from three-point range. Emanuel Sharp had 20 points on the afternoon.
Houston fell to 17-2 on the season and 5-1 in Big 12 play with the loss, while Texas Tech improved to 16-4 and 6-1 in the league. Houston has a chance to start a new road winning streak as their next game is at TCU on Wednesday. Meantime, Texas Tech has the week off before taking on UCF on the road next Saturday.
