Even for Arizona, one of the best teams in college basketball, life in the Big 12 is unreal.
February is about to be a full-on gauntlet for the Wildcats, and if anyone needed a reminder of how ridiculous this league is, just look at the seven-game stretch they’re about to walk into. Starting February 9, Arizona will play seven straight Quad 1 games.
It kicks off with a road trip to No. 19 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse, which is a nightmare for pretty much anyone. From there, it’s a quick turnaround with No. 12 Texas Tech and No. 13 BYU coming into Tucson. Both of those teams are absolutely elite, and both are built to win games in March. Then it’s off to Houston to take on the sixth-ranked Cougars, who might be the most physical team in the country, yet again under Kelvin Sampson.
Think it slows down after that? Nope.
Arizona heads to Waco to face Baylor, then comes back home to play Kansas again, followed by a visit from No. 9 Iowa State to cap off the month. That’s seven straight high-level battles, five against current top-15 teams, and every single one of them matters in March. Forget about “bad losses” because there aren’t any in this stretch. The floor is a respectable defeat. The ceiling? The No. 1 overall seed in the Big Dance.
This is what Big 12 basketball is now. It’s not just tough, it’s ruthless. You don’t get breathers. You don’t get weeks off. You go from one ranked team to the next, and if you’re not ready, you’ll get buried. Arizona knew this was coming when they joined the league, and they have already experienced similar things in previous years, but seeing it mapped out in black and white just hits different. T
So, buckle up, Wildcats. You wanted in the best basketball league in the country, and February is here to make sure you know exactly what that means. Now it’s up to them to ride out the storm.
