College football parity is at an all-time high, for better or worse, and in this case, it’s actually better. While NIL money and transfer portal chaos have cast a dark shadow over some of the good in the sport, look no further than what went down at Houston and at Utah this cycle to show some of the changing of the guard.
In the 2026 recruiting cycle, both programs signed a Top 10 player in the high school recruiting class, with the Cougars adding five-star quarterback Keisean Henderson and Utah adding five-star offensive lineman Kelvin Obot. Henderson checks in as the fourth-ranked player in the country, while Obot trails him by one spot at No. 5.
All Teams With a Top 10 Player
As we noted, Utah and Houston broke up the usual SEC and Big Ten dominance among top players, but they weren’t the only ones. Listen to this balanced field, spanning four conferences, and independent Notre Dame. USC (Big Ten), Vanderbilt (SEC), Miami (ACC), Houston (Big 12), Utah (Big 12), Maryland (Big Ten), Notre Dame (Independent), Georgia (SEC), and LSU (SEC).
What It Means Going Forward
There are two ways to look at the parity at the top of the recruiting rankings. Similar to that of Texas Tech, the immediate reaction is to view the Cougars and Utes as ponying up in terms of recruiting and NIL.
