Well, if you wanted College Basketball to become hockey for a day, you’re in luck! Look no further than the Big East, where a massive brawl broke out between St. John’s and Providence.
The play started like some scraps tend to start on a breakaway layup. The play occurred when former Providence Friar Bryce Hopkins took off toward the basket, and current Friar Duncan Powell made little to no effort to go for the ball and shoved Hopkins out of the way.
Sure enough, Hopkins shot up and went right after Powell, which cleared both benches as punches started to fly. Here’s the clip.
Referees, coaches, and players all sprang into action, and it took a few minutes for things to actually calm down. Though both players donned a Providence jersey at one point in their careers, Hopkins and Powell were never teammates, but you could sense the hostility surrounding Hopkins’ return.
Several tweets noted that a total of six players were ejected in the brawl, leaving both sides with thinned-out benches. While the brawl was going on, the broadcast team mentioned that there’s a very high likelihood of ejections (it happened) and potentially even suspensions on the line.
