Hilton Coliseum has a reputation. Loud. Hostile. Relentless. Ask around the Big 12, and you will hear the same thing.
But according to Bill Self, the building itself is not the real problem.
After Kansas faced Iowa State in Ames, Self offered a refreshingly honest take on why Hilton is so difficult to navigate. And it was not some dramatic speech about decibel levels or student sections.
“What makes it hard to play here more times than not is Iowa State’s got really good players out there on the court,” Self said. “That’s what makes it hard. The crowd’s great, but that adds to it.”
Hilton Coliseum is loud. No one disputes that. The place shakes when Iowa State does its thing, and this year has been an incredible year for TJ Otzelberger’s group. Of course it’s incredible!
Still, Self did not lean into any of that as the primary reason.
For him, it starts with personnel. Players like Tamin Lipsey, Joshua Jefferson, Milan Momcilovic, and many others have helped turn the venue into a historic stop. Still, there were many others who came before them who got that place rocking.
Self has coached in just about every difficult environment college basketball offers. If he says the guys in the uniforms are the biggest reason Hilton is tough, that carries weight. The building amplifies it, and the fans fuel it, but the foundation is the roster.
It is easy to romanticize venues. College basketball thrives on that energy. But at the end of the day, great atmospheres usually follow great teams. Iowa State has both right now.
Hilton Coliseum is hard because Iowa State makes it hard. The crowd just makes sure you never forget it.
