Kansas basketball took a gut punch on Saturday.
Sure, a lopsided loss to Cincinnati at Allen Fieldhouse left plenty of frustration hanging in the air, but if you thought that would scare off the students, you have not been to Lawrence.
Hours after that loss, Kansas students were back in full force, camping out for tickets to the upcoming matchup against the Houston Cougars on Monday.
And then Bill Self showed up.
Self made an appearance at the 8 a.m. lottery for camping, stepping into a crowd that easily could have been bitter after Saturday. Instead of ducking the moment, he leaned into it. From what could be heard in videos circulating online, Self took accountability for the recent losses and offered a message that felt equal parts perspective and challenge.
“18-21 is the best time of your life, so take it in slow mo,” Self told the students. “But tomorrow night at 8, put that sucker in overdrive.”
It was classic Self. A little wisdom, humor, and a direct challenge.
Whatever frustration exists around this team, the student section is not wavering. Kansas still has one of the most loyal home environments in college basketball, and Big Monday against Houston gives everyone a chance to reset the tone.
It is also worth noting that Self has historically been very good in these standalone weeknight showcase games. The stage will be bright, and the students who camped through the weekend will be packed into Allen Fieldhouse.
Saturday was rough. No way around that, but the sight of students camping anyway, and the head coach walking into the middle of it to own the moment, says a lot about the culture in Lawrence.
Big Monday is coming. And Allen Fieldhouse will be in overdrive.
