When Dick Vitale speaks, people listen. And this time, he did not exactly whisper.
The longtime college basketball voice took to social media to call for what he described as a needed “divorce” between the Kansas Jayhawks and freshman star Darryn Peterson, saying the situation has become a “soap opera” that needs to end.
“Sometimes a divorce is good for everyone involved & I firmly believe that needs to happen NOW,” Vitale wrote. “The Darryn Peterson soap opera needs to end. It has to be a nightmare for ALL involved.”
Vitale went on to emphasize Peterson’s immense talent, calling it “off the charts,” while also suggesting that counseling and honest conversations might be the only path toward a solution. He framed it less as an indictment of one side and more as a relationship that may simply not be working.
“In a marriage or in life, when there are obviously problems, you get the parties involved altogether for professional counseling to try to solve the problem,” Vitale added. “Hope they do that at Kansas with Darryn Peterson to see if a solution can lead to happiness.”
Vitale did leave the door open for reconciliation. He expressed hope that a solution could be found that leads to what he called a “March Madness of happiness.” But he also acknowledged the alternative, that perhaps the best outcome is a clean break, with Peterson shifting focus toward preparing for the NBA Draft.
“Not fair to Coach Bill Self, KU Hoops & ALL the loyal ROCK CHALK FANS, what is going on?” Vitale concluded.
That’s the tricky balance here. Peterson’s talent is undeniable. Kansas’ expectations are legit =. When those two forces are not aligned, it becomes a story bigger than box scores.
Whether this ends in resolution or separation remains to be seen. But when someone like Dick Vitale publicly calls for change, it signals that what is happening in Lawrence has moved beyond quiet locker room chatter.
