For the first time since being fired at Kansas State, Jerome Tang resurfaced publicly on Saturday night.
Tang was spotted at Koch Arena for Wichita State’s 69–57 win over Temple, sitting in the crowd and taking in the action. It did not take long for fans to connect the dots. Wichita State’s head coach is Paul Mills, a former Baylor assistant and longtime friend of Tang’s.
The two go way back.
That naturally leads to the question everyone is asking. Is Tang simply supporting a close friend during a big home win, or is there something more to it?
It is not uncommon for coaches to lean on their network after a firing. The profession is tight knit and relationships matter. Sometimes showing up is just about being around people you trust after a difficult stretch. Other times, it can be about exploring what comes next.
Could Tang land on Mills’ staff in some capacity? It would not be unheard of. Former head coaches often reset as assistants, regroup, and wait for the next opportunity. Wichita State would certainly benefit from Tang’s recruiting connections and experience, especially given his ties across Texas and the Big 12 footprint.
At the same time, not every appearance needs to spark a rumor.
Tang and Mills have history. Supporting a friend at a not far down the road from Manhattan is not exactly a covert operation. Coaches attend games all the time. Sometimes it is that simple.
Still, optics matter. When a recently fired head coach pops up courtside at a program led by one of his closest friends, people are going to speculate. That is part of the business.
Whether this was a casual visit or the first step toward a new chapter, one thing is clear. Jerome Tang is back in the public eye, and wherever he lands next, there will be plenty of attention.
