The Big 12 is once again front and center in the NCAA Tournament conversation, and this time it’s because of just how crowded the bubble has become.
In his latest bracketology update, Joe Lunardi placed six Big 12 teams squarely in the mix for at-large bids. It’s a reminder of both the depth and the week-to-week volatility inside the conference that allows for these teams to build such solid resumes.
A LOOK AT THE BUBBLE
UCF currently sits in the Last Four Byes category. That designation means the Knights are projected safely in the field for now, but with very little breathing room. One slip against the wrong opponent could quickly change their position.
Just behind them are the TCU Horned Frogs, who landed in the Last Four In tier. That spot suggests a trip to Dayton if the bracket were finalized today. TCU is in, but barely, and every remaining regular-season game carries added significance.
Outside the field but still within reach are four more Big 12 programs: the West Virginia Mountaineers, Cincinnati Bearcats, Baylor Bears, and Oklahoma State Cowboys. West Virginia, Baylor, and Oklahoma State have been hovering around that spot for weeks now, but the big change here is Cincinnati. The Bearcats were left for dead weeks ago, but since Wes Miller apologized to his fans and vowed to get it right, they have, and they are back from the dead.
The challenge for all six teams is that the Big 12 rarely offers any gimme games. Opportunities for resume-building wins are available almost every week, but so are chances to absorb another loss that complicates the picture. That dynamic has created a tight cluster of teams hovering around the same tier in the metrics and projections.
As the calendar tightens and the conference tournament approaches, the margin for error continues to shrink. For UCF and TCU, the focus is on solidifying their footing and improving. For West Virginia, Cincinnati, Baylor, and Oklahoma State, it is about making a final push that leaves no doubt.
With six teams in the bubble conversation, the Big 12 is poised to play a significant role in shaping the back end of the bracket over the next few weeks.
