Here’s a statistic you won’t hear every day: Bill Self has never lost a Big Monday game and is a perfect 40-0 in his career. That is about as unreal as it gets!
That record is about to be put to the test against Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars, who travel to Lawrence, Kansas, for a matchup with the Jayhawks, tipping off at 8:00 PM CT on ESPN.
Conveniently enough, history will work in favor of both squads as the Cougars bring an incredible run of their own to Allen Fieldhouse. After dropping back-to-back games against No. 6 Iowa State and No. 4 Arizona, Houston would have to lose three straight games, which hasn’t happened since they made the move to the Big 12 Conference. They’ve actually lost just seven conference games total in that time.
To take it one step further, Houston hasn’t lost three games in a row since January of the 2016-17 season, when they dropped three straight against UCF, Memphis, and SMU.
Needless to say, both of these things feel very unlikely, yet somethings going to have to break. Will it be Kansas and Bill Self losing back-to-back games at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time ever on Big Monday? Or will it be Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars suffering their first three-game losing streak in nearly 10 years?
Only time will tell, and with the tip-off growing closer and closer, the anticipation continues to build. If you’re a fan of high-level basketball, this is one you don’t want to miss!
