There has been no shortage of conversation around Darryn Peterson lately.

Between being held out of certain stretches, appearing disengaged at times, and speculation about his long-term plans, the noise around Kansas’ star guard has only grown louder as the season has moved along.

On Monday morning, ahead of Kansas’ matchup with the Houston Cougars, Peterson’s father added a subtle but noticeable entry into the conversation.

He posted an Instagram story featuring his son with a caption that read, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

Well, it’s not a long caption, but it is notable.

Kansas needs Peterson engaged and availabletonight against Houston, and going forward into March. When he is locked in, he changes the ceiling of what the Jayhawks can be. His talent has never been the question. It is obvious that he’s an incredibly special player.

The issue has been consistency and availability down the stretch.

If this message signals a reset, even a small one, that would be great news in Lawrence. Big Monday games, especially against a team like Houston, are the type of stage where Kansas traditionally leans on its stars. Having Peterson fully bought in makes a difference.

There does not have to be a dramatic storyline attached to it. Sometimes it is as simple as a player deciding to lock back in and finish strong. If that is where this is headed, Kansas will gladly take it.

For now, it is just a caption. A short sentence posted hours before a big game.

But if it leads to Peterson consistently back on the floor and engaged when it matters most, that is more than enough for KU.
