Kansas’ 69-56 win over Houston last night just did not end when the final buzzer sounded. It carried into the press conference room, where an interesting exchange unfolded between Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson and Kansas guard Darryn Peterson.
After the loss, Sampson was asked about Kansas and offered a comment that caught attention.
“Kansas is just one of those teams that you just never know,” Sampson said.
When asked to clarify what he meant, Sampson added, “They’re pretty good. So are we. We’re pretty good too, but not tonight.”
It was not a direct shot, but it was layered. The idea that Kansas is unpredictable can be read in a couple of different ways. On one hand, it acknowledges talent and the ceiling for this group that’s still out there, and on the other, it’s pretty disrespectful to the Jayhawks. In a season where Kansas has been scrutinized for uneven stretches of play by Darryn Peterson and others, Sampson’s comments struck a bit of a nerve with folks in Lawrence.
Sampson then exited the room, and Kansas players took the podium. When Peterson was asked about Sampson’s comments, his response was short and honest.
“Dang. I don’t like that.”
That was it. No rant. No extended explanation. Just a quick reaction that made it clear he heard it and felt it.
So who was right?
It feels like one of those moments where both sides can stand on semi-solid ground. Sampson did not overtly insult Kansas, or at least not that badly of a roast. He called them pretty good and acknowledged his own team fell short that night. At the same time, competitors are wired to latch onto anything that feels like doubt. If Peterson heard “you just never know” as a slight, that tracks too.
For now, it’s a little early to declare which party was in the right, but if the results on the basketball court carry over into that conversation, Darryn Peterson should start with a leg up on Sampson.
