Kliff Kingsbury is back on an NFL sideline.
The Los Angeles Rams named the former Texas Tech quarterback and head coach as their assistant head coach on Monday, adding him to Sean McVay’s staff after two seasons as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator.
Kingsbury’s name had circulated around multiple openings this offseason following his stint in Washington. He reportedly interviewed for both the head coach and offensive coordinator openings with the Baltimore Ravens and also met with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants regarding their offensive coordinator positions, according to the Rams.
Instead of landing one of those top play-calling roles, Kingsbury will now work alongside McVay in Los Angeles, giving the Rams another offensive-minded voice with head coaching experience.
For Texas Tech fans, it marks another chapter in a career that has already covered plenty of ground.
Kingsbury served as the head coach at Texas Tech Red Raiders from 2013 to 2018 after previously starring as the program’s quarterback. Following his time in Lubbock, he became the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2019-22. The Cardinals moved on after a 4-13 season in 2022, leading Kingsbury back to the college ranks for a year as a senior offensive analyst at USC under Lincoln Riley in 2023.
He returned to the NFL with the Commanders and now lands in Los Angeles with one of the league’s most established offensive staffs.
Kingsbury was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame in 2023 alongside his former head coach, the late Mike Leach, a fitting recognition for a quarterback who helped shape the Red Raiders’ offensive identity in the early 2000s.
He is also the second former Red Raider to earn a new NFL title this cycle. Davis Webb, who played quarterback at Texas Tech from 2013-15 and threw for 5,557 yards during his time in Lubbock under Kingsbury, was promoted to offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos after serving as quarterbacks coach under Sean Payton.
Kingsbury’s path has not been linear, but it continues to evolve. Now, he joins McVay’s staff in Los Angeles, adding another NFL chapter to a resume that still traces back to Lubbock.
