Former Texas Tech standout Kevin Obanor recently shared a deeply emotional message on social media detailing some of the difficult experiences he has faced while playing professional basketball overseas.
Obanor, who is currently in Israel continuing his basketball career, posted a series of photos on Instagram alongside a lengthy message describing what life has been like while the region deals with ongoing conflict tied to the war involving Iran. In his post, Obanor explained that he initially traveled to Israel simply to play basketball but quickly found himself in situations he never imagined experiencing.
“I came to Israel to play basketball, but I never imagined running into a bomb shelter every 5–10 minutes, hearing 20+ bombs going off for a week straight, or hiding under a highway for shelter,” Obanor wrote. “It’s been one of the hardest experiences of my life.”
The former Texas Tech forward also explained that the experience has been even more emotional because of his work with children through his nonprofit efforts. Seeing young people grow up surrounded by conflict, he said, has been especially difficult to process.
“Working with kids through my nonprofit makes it even heavier,” Obanor continued. “Seeing children grow up in this reality breaks my heart. For many of them, this is normal life, something most people could never truly understand.”
Obanor noted that the photos he shared only represent a small glimpse of what he has witnessed in recent weeks, adding that the full reality of the situation is difficult to capture.
Through the uncertainty and fear, however, Obanor said his faith has helped guide him through the experience.
“Through it all, I’m certain that prayers work and miracles do exist,” he wrote. “It would be a disservice to not share my testimony. God is truly powerful for sending the right people my way to shelter and protect me in such a time.”
Obanor finished by saying, “I’m not taking sides. I’m praying for peace, safety, and healing for people all around the world,” Obanor said. “My testimony is simple: God is real.”
Obanor became a fan favorite during his time at Texas Tech after transferring from Oral Roberts, where he first gained national attention during the Golden Eagles’ memorable run to the Sweet 16 in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. He later spent two seasons in Lubbock, bringing veteran leadership and scoring ability to the Red Raiders.
Now playing professionally overseas, Obanor’s message offered a rare glimpse into the personal challenges athletes can face while pursuing their careers abroad. His post quickly drew attention from fans and former teammates who shared messages of support and prayers following his update.
