BYU basketball coach Kevin Young spotted and greeted Andy Reid, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, before his team’s 68-48 win over West Virginia in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday.
Both, Young and Cougars star freshman AJ Dybantsa, connected with Reid, a fellow BYU alum and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, got the opportunity to shake hands with the Chiefs coaching legend upon advancing to Thursday’s quarterfinal round against 2-seed Houston.
After the game, Young told Ben Criddle of ESPN Radio of his prior relationship with Reid and how Kansas City, overall, has performed in hosting his team and the league itself this week at the T-Mobile Center.
“I dapped Coach Reid before the game. He’s a great guy. I’ve been able to chat with him a little since I’ve taken this job. It was awesome seeing him court-side.”
He continued:
“But just in general, I’ve said this before, this is an amazing, very well-run tournament. The city of Kansas City does a phenomenal job. I love this arena. It’s super nice. The Big 12 deserves a lot of credit for it. It just feels like a big-time event. I’m happy that we could be in it and continue to play in it. But in terms of seeing, like, the who’s who in the crowd, it’s awesome.”
Long before his coaching days, Reid played offensive tackle at Glendale Community College in California and later at BYU for LaVell Edwards. He’d become a graduate assistant in Provo before carrying on to other assistant coaching stints at San Francisco, Northern Arizona, UTEP, and Missouri before launching his coaching career in the NFL.
Reid’s been in town supporting his alma mater all week, alongside Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
