The Texas Tech Red Raiders football picked up a major recruiting win on the defensive side of the ball as four-star linebacker Jhadyn Nelson announced his commitment to the program.
Nelson, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker out of Houston, Texas, chose the Red Raiders over an impressive list of finalists that included Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Texas, giving head coach Joey McGuire and his staff a significant addition on the recruiting trail.
“All in. Guns up forever,” Nelson said following his commitment.
The pledge marks another strong addition for Texas Tech as the program continues to build momentum on the recruiting front. Landing a player with Nelson’s profile, both in terms of size and national interest, is a notable win, especially considering the caliber of programs involved in his recruitment.
Nelson brings ideal physical tools to the linebacker position, already possessing college-ready size with the frame to continue developing at the next level. At 6’3” and 220 pounds, he projects as a versatile defender capable of making an impact both against the run and in space. Players with his combination of length, athleticism, and physicality are highly coveted, particularly in a league like the Big 12 Conference, where offenses continue to evolve and demand versatility from defensive units.
For Texas Tech, this commitment also reinforces the program’s ability to win key recruiting battles against some of the biggest brands in college football. Beating out programs like Ohio State and Texas for an in-state prospect speaks to the traction McGuire and his staff have built, particularly within the state of Texas.
The Red Raiders have made recruiting in-state talent a priority, and Nelson’s decision is another example of that strategy paying off. Keeping top prospects home while fending off national powers has become a key part of Texas Tech’s rise on the recruiting trail.
With Nelson now in the fold, Texas Tech adds another foundational piece to its future defense as the program continues to build toward competing at the top of the Big 12.
