Kansas head coach Bill Self was asked after Kansas lost to St. John’s how much time he will take to decide his coaching future, and the KU head coach did not hold back, admitting he has not decided on whether or not he will be coaching next season.
Self said, “I’ll get back, get with family, visit and see what’s going on. I love what I do. I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well… I’ll get back home, and it’ll all be discussed… I love what I do. I wanna feel good while I’m doing it, though.”
Self went on to talk about how he’s viewing his future, adding, “I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time… It used to be, when you’ve done this as long as I have, you look at it in 5-year increments. Now I’m probably looking at it more in 2-year increments… I’ll go back and break it down and see where that leads.”
Self and the Jayhawks have now failed to reach the Sweet 16 in four-straight seasons after winning the 2022 National Championship. But Self’s resume is as solid as it gets, as a two-time National Champion, two-time AP College Coach of the Year, six-time Big 12 Coach of the Year, 17 Big 12 regular season titles, along with being in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Bill Self Recent Health Issues
Self missed the Colorado game this year due to health reasons. It was the second time in the past six months Self has been taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Self later shared he started feeling “some very abnormal chest issues”, which was concerning considering his past heart health issues. It ended up being a hydration issue that caused his AFib (atrial fibrillation) to act up. Self said he could have coached at Colorado, but with the elevation and taking a flight, the steps were made to be extra cautious in this instance.
Self had stents inserted into his heart during a procedure in 2023 after his first episode with chest pains and then he had more stents inserted this past summer in 2025.
So now, after another early ouster for the Jayhawks, the questions are not just about what KU does to retool its roster for 2026-27, but also whether or not Bill Self wants to continue to coach one of the most historic programs in college basketball.
