TCU Advances to Women’s March Madness Sweet 16

NCAA Basketball: Texas-Arlington at Texas Tech

The TCU Horned Frogs are in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament for the second straight year.

The Horned Frogs were one of three teams in action in Sunday’s second round, as Baylor and Texas Tech both tried to advance to the next round of the tournament at games around the country.

But TCU was the only team that was playing a home tournament game. And it made a difference.

Here are the results of Sunday’s games, along with Monday’s schedule for the second round.

TCU 62, Washington 59 (OT)

The No. 6 seeded Huskies (22-11) pushed the No. 3 seeded Horned Frogs (31-5) to the brink, but TCU prevailed in overtime and extended their NCAA-best home win streak to 44 games, a streak that will live on into next season.

Washington had a halftime lead and TCU had to rally to regain the edge late in regulation. But the Huskies tied the game and sent it into overtime, but only after TCU’s Olivia Miles missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer

The Horned Frogs took a seven-point lead early in overtime, but Washington was undeterred and had a chance to tie with a 3-pointer in the final seconds. It was Taylor Bigby’s basket with 1:06 left in overtime, which gave TCU a five-point lead, that ultimately made the difference.

Miles had 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Bigby had 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Clara Silva had some big defensive plays down the stretch and finished with 16 points.

LSU 101, Texas Tech 47

It was a painful end to the Lady Raiders’ best season in years, as No. 7 seeded Texas Tech lost to No. 2 seeded LSU in a game where the Tigers outscored TTU, 33-7, in the third quarter to put the game away. Bailey Maupin, a senior who played her final game for the Lady Raiders, was the only Texas Tech player in double figures with 19 points.

Tech’s 26 wins was its most since 2002-03 under then-coach Marsha Sharp (29) and was the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013 under Kristy Curry. The first-round win on Friday was Tech’s first NCAA Tournament win since 2005 under Sharp.

It was the end of a huge season in Lubbock, one that head coach Krista Gerlich hopes she can build on next season as she loses several seniors.

Duke 69, Baylor 46

The No. 3 seeded Blue Devils outscored the No. 6 seeded Bears, 38-16 by halftime and their second-round contest was nothing like their season-opening meeting in Paris, which Baylor won in a tight affair. Duke advanced to the Sweet 16.

Baylor guard Taliah Scott led with 13 points. But it was an unwelcome end for Baylor’s senior class, led by Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, Bella Fontleroy and Jana Van Gytenbeek. The trio combined for 15 points.

In five seasons at Baylor, head coach Nicki Collen has taken the three-time national champions to the NCAA Tournament every year. But, the Bears have only advanced to the Sweet 16 one time, in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
