The North Carolina Tar Heels’ head coaching job is already generating buzz across the college basketball world, and notably, the Big 12 is heavily represented near the top of the board.
According to Kalshi betting odds, three current Big 12 head coaches rank inside the top six candidates to potentially take over in Chapel Hill: T.J. Otzelberger, Tommy Lloyd, and Grant McCasland.
Leading that trio is Otzelberger, who checks in at No. 2 overall with an 18% chance. The Iowa State Cyclones head coach has built a reputation as one of the top culture-setters in the sport, quickly turning Iowa State into a consistent contender in the Big 12. His defensive identity and player development have made him a fast riser in coaching circles, and clearly, a name to watch in this search.
Right behind him is Lloyd at No. 3 with a 10% chance. While currently leading the Arizona Wildcats, Lloyd’s ties to the national landscape and sustained success in the West have kept his name prominent in high-profile openings. His up-tempo offensive style and international recruiting background would bring a different flavor to UNC.
Coming in at No. 6 is McCasland, who holds a 5% chance. The Texas Tech head coach has steadily built his resume, first at North Texas and now in Lubbock. Known for his toughness and defensive approach, McCasland fits the mold of a program builder, something UNC may value as it evaluates long-term stability.
At the top of the odds board sits Billy Donovan at 32%, followed by Otzelberger (18%), Lloyd (10%), Nate Oats (9%), Mark Byington (8%), and McCasland (5%). Beyond that group, the field becomes far less defined, with all remaining candidates listed below 5%.
The presence of three Big 12 coaches in the top six underscores the league’s growing reputation as arguably the deepest conference in college basketball, not just in terms of teams, but coaching talent as well.
And while coaching searches are notoriously unpredictable, one thing is clear: if UNC is indeed casting a wide net, the Big 12 sits squarely in the center of it.
