Rumors about the future of Bill Self have been swirling, but the Hall of Fame head coach made it clear this week that the speculation is overblown and flat-out wrong.
In comments to Gary Bedore of the Kansas City Star, Self addressed recent reports suggesting he could be nearing retirement. His response was direct and unmistakable.
“B.S., bad info,” Self said.
That quote alone should quiet much of the noise surrounding the longtime Kansas head coach, who reiterated there is currently no news to report regarding his future. As things stand, Self remains in charge in Lawrence, with no indication that a decision, either way, is imminent.
The timing of the rumors is notable, coming during a pivotal offseason for Kansas. Like much of the Big 12, the Jayhawks are navigating roster turnover, NIL negotiations, and the ever-changing landscape of college basketball. Programs across the country are reloading, but Kansas continues to operate with its usual expectations: compete for a Big 12 title and make a deep NCAA Tournament run.
Self’s presence is central to that equation.
Since taking over in 2003, he has built Kansas into one of the most consistent powers in the sport. With multiple Final Four appearances and two national championships, Self has not only sustained the program’s blue-blood status, but he’s also elevated it. Even amid recent challenges, including health concerns and shifting roster dynamics in the NIL era, Self has remained fully engaged in leading the program forward.
That’s what makes these rumors particularly significant. When a coach of Self’s stature becomes the subject of retirement speculation, it naturally grabs attention across the sport. Still, according to Self himself, there’s nothing to see here, at least not right now.
Now, could that change in a few days, weeks, or months? Absolutely! If Self were to make a move, it’s hard to imagine it would come at a time that puts Kansas in a tough spot. Should Self decide it’s time to hang it up, he would likely move early to give the Jayhawks the best shot in the coaching carousel and the portal.
If and when there is real news regarding Self’s future, it will likely come directly, not through speculation or secondhand reports.
For now, consider the message from Lawrence loud and clear: Bill Self isn’t going anywhere.
