A Big 12 Coach is Expected to be a Top UNC Target

NCAA Basketball: Brigham Young at Arizona

One of the Big 12’s top coaches could soon find himself at the center of one of college basketball’s most high-profile coaching searches.

According to a report from TheAthletic, the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball program has identified two primary targets in its ongoing coaching search, and one of them comes directly from the Big 12. Tommy Lloyd, currently leading the Arizona Wildcats, is reportedly among the program’s top targets.

The other name on North Carolina’s shortlist is Billy Donovan, who is currently with the Chicago Bulls. Together, the two represent a pair of highly accomplished coaches with vastly different backgrounds, one firmly entrenched in the college game, the other a proven winner at both the collegiate and professional levels.

For Lloyd, the interest from North Carolina underscores just how quickly he has risen in the coaching ranks. Since taking over at Arizona, Lloyd has built one of the most consistently dominant programs in the country, combining high-level recruiting with an up-tempo, efficient offensive system. His success has not only elevated Arizona nationally but has also helped the Wildcats return to blue-blood status.

Lloyd’s ability to develop talent and maintain a winning culture has made him one of the most respected coaches in college basketball. That reputation now has him squarely on the radar of one of the sport’s premier blue-blood programs.

For North Carolina, the search reflects the magnitude of the position. The Tar Heels are aiming high, targeting coaches with proven success and the ability to sustain excellence at a national level. Lloyd fits that profile, particularly given his track record of winning and his familiarity with the college landscape.

Of course, it’s yet to be seen whether or not Lloyd actually wants the gig. He’s got an incredible thing going in Tucson, with an overall head coaching record of 146-35 and a conference record of 77-21. They’re also in the midst of a deep March Madness run and have their eyes set on a matchup against No. 4 Arkansas tomorrow at 8:45 PM CT.

For now, Lloyd remains in Tucson, but his name being tied to North Carolina is a storyline worth monitoring closely as the coaching carousel continues to turn.
