Inside Iowa State’s Effort to Retain T.J. Otzelberger Amid North Carolina Rumors

NCAA Basketball: Iowa State at Houston

Amid one of the deepest runs of T.J. Otzelberger‘s career, Iowa State has worked effortlessly in the background to keep their basketball leader right where he is.

Otz reaffirmed his commitment to the university and the team earlier this week during a press conference, where he was asked about his name in relation to the North Carolina opening. The Tar Heels, the No. 6 seed in the South Region, parted ways with Hubert Davis on Tuesday after failing to get around No. 11 VCU in the opening weekend.

How We Got Here?

It’s unclear whether North Carolina actually reached out to Otz or his management team while the Cyclones, the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region, prepare for their battle with No. 6 Tennessee in the Sweet 16 on Friday evening in Chicago. Regardless, the Iowa State coach followed up his statement Wednesday with another comment cementing his faith in Ames and the mission ahead of his team as they aim for the Elite Eight and beyond.

On Friday, the Iowa State Daily, the student-run publication at Iowa State University, reported on a conversation had between Otz and the Iowa State President David Cook in the wake of swirling conversation about the coach’s future and potential job interest.

Both Cook and Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard have publicly voiced their support for Otz and their interest in retaining the coach for the long haul.

Blue-Blood Schools Coming for Midwest Fandoms – What’s New?

If you’re Iowa State, though, it’s pretty critical to preserve a guy like Otz in this volatile climate of college athletics. He and the Cyclones have made five consecutive tournament appearances since taking over for Steve Prohm in 2021, and he’s got strong ties to Ames through his coaching career and his wife, Alison Lacey, a former Cyclones standout for the women’s team from 2006 to 2010.

Moreover, all this coaching drama from a tournament is the direct result of an internet that couldn’t care less about timing or discretion amid the biggest tournament of the season.

A lot of questions have been answered with this tournament, and many others – Bill Self, Tommy Lloyd, Kelvin Sampson – remain unknown as the field narrows to two remaining squads with No. 1 Arizona and, of course, Iowa State. One question Cyclones don’t have to worry about is where their head coach will be next season.
