Sonny Dykes is sticking around as TCU‘s head football coach for the foreseeable future.
A new, multi-year extension first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Friday would keep Dykes with the Horned Frogs through at least 2030 if not longer. Details are sparse, but it seems TCU has locked up their coach for the years ahead.
Dykes has led TCU to 36 wins since 2022, when the Frogs earned their first-ever seat in the College Football Playoff. The Big Springs, Texas, native becomes the third Big 12 coach to receive such an extension this year along with Brent Brennan at Arizona and Joey McGuire at Texas Tech.
In his previous agreement, Dykes is earning $7 million through the end of the 2028 season.
Upon Oklahoma State’s firing of Mike Gundy in 2025, Dykes joined a unique circle of the league’s most-tenured coaches led by Kalani Sitake, hired at BYU in 2016.
Dykes has been especially successful at TCU, going 36-17 since he jumped over from SMU amid the pandemic. He’s produced two quality quarterbacks in that stretch, Max Duggan and Josh Hoover, with the latter transferring to Indiana following the 2025 season.
TCU has also produced 13 different NFL Draft picks since Dykes took over. That list includes first-round wide receiver Quentin Johnston to the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.
