Gambling has become a popular leisure activity for millions of people in the US, but not everyone can enjoy it freely. Athletes and staff members in the NCAA have to abide by specific rules around gambling. The NCAA has a zero-tolerance policy for athletes, coaches and staff who engage in sports betting on any sports that are sponsored at any level by the NCAA. This means that not only can they not bet on the sport that they play or work in, but neither can they bet on any other sports that the NCAA sponsors, including professional or international competitions. There are a limited number of sports that are not sponsored at any level by the NCAA, which can be bet on, but the best rule of thumb for athletes, coaches and other staff involved with the NCAA is to abstain from all betting activities.
However, for other forms of gambling, the rules are much less strict. Who Are the NCAA Rules For?
The NCAA rules are strict, but they only apply to people who it considers to be in relevant positions; these people make up four main groups.

The penalties that the NCAA applies for violating its sports betting rules can be incredibly severe. Penalties leveraged against breaches in the past have included:
- Loss of eligibility, in some cases, permanently.
- Suspension from competition, carrying a variety of strict reinstatement conditions.
