The Big 12 Softball Tournament is set after the results of the final three games of regular season action ended on Sunday. Seeding came down to the final day because the four teams vying for the top four seeds behind Texas Tech were still in action. UCF defeated Iowa State, Arizona lost to Utah and Oklahoma State beat Kansas.
That sorted out the Nos. 2-5 seeds in the tournament. Oklahoma State will be the No. 2 seed, Arizona will be the No. 3 seed, UCF will be the No. 4 seed and Kansas will be the No. 5 seed. OSU gets the No. 2 seed because it won its series with Arizona. The two teams ended up in a second-place tie because of Sunday’s action.
Texas Tech is No. 1 Seed
Texas Tech clinched the No. 1 seed last seek and ended the regular season with a series win over Baylor. The series ended with Red Raiders pitcher NiJaree Canady throwing a perfect game against the Bears.
The Red Raiders won the regular-season title and the Big 12 Tournament last year, riding that wave of momentum all the way to the Women’s College World Series championship, where they lost to Texas.
Texas Tech will start the event against No. 8 seed Baylor in the second game of Thursday’s four-game block. The tournament will open with No. 4 seed UCF facing No. 5 seed Kansas in the first game at 11 a.m.
On the other side of the bracket No. 2 seed Oklahoma State will face No. 7 seed Utah in the third game while No. 3 seed Arizona will face No. 6 seed Arizona State in the final game.
Only the top eight teams in the conference standings advance to the Big 12 Tournament. Iowa State, BYU and Houston were left out of the field based on finishing outside the top eight.
